Turkey’s Thessaloniki consulate attacked

13 August 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
Turkey’s Consulate General in the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki was attacked by an unidentified group of people on Thursday morning, leaving only slight material damage due to a subsequent fire.

An unknown group of people reportedly attacked Turkey’s consulate general in Thessaloniki, a town where many ethnic Turks live, by throwing a Molotov cocktail into the yard of the consulate, Greek media reported on Thursday. The attack occurred at 4:15 a.m. and the attackers have not yet been identified. There were no reported injuries.

A fire erupted on the consulate’s wall as a result of the attack and Greek firefighters were quick to contain the blaze. Greek government spokesman Giorgos Petalotis described the event as a “criminal act” which Athens “condemns absolutely and categorically.” “We express our regret to the Turkish government. Those responsible will be arrested and brought to justice,” read the statement released by Petalotis.
