According to data from the State Meteorological Directorate on Monday, temperatures will continue to exceed normal seasonal levels throughout the country this week, especially in southern and central Turkey. The province of Ankara saw 41 degrees Celsius on Monday while the temperature in the southeastern province of Şanlıurfa reached 43 degrees Celsius on the same day. In addition, the southern province of Adana reached a record temperature this year: 48 degrees Celsius. Municipal officials place sprinklers in some of Adana’s parks for birds to cool themselves in the heat.
Officials have warned the public to take measures against the heat to prevent problems such as heat stroke. While many people prefer to stay indoors due to the scorching temperatures, others are heading out to enjoy the cool water.
A white goods salesman in Adana noted that the number of air conditioners being sold has increased considerably in recent days because of the hot, humid weather in Adana. The salesman underlined that if the high temperatures continue in Adana and people’s demand for air conditioners increases, they will face a shortage of air conditioners.
Children have been swimming in the Adana State Waterworks Authority’s (DSİ) irrigation channels to escape the heat; however, the Adana police have warned the children that swimming in these channels is dangerous. The Adana police also said that they will fine the families of those children who swim in these channels.
