İstanbul Stock Exchange reaches new record highs

30 July 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN WITH REUTERS, İSTANBUL
The İstanbul Stock Exchange (İMKB) continued to break records on Thursday, hitting 60,950.85 points for the first time in its history in the first session of trading.

The index started off yesterday with gains, rising by 330.14 points, or 0.55 percent, in the first trading session compared to the closing of the previous day. The highest in-session value the index reached was 60,718.93 points on Wednesday, the day when it also registered a record high closing of 60,404.33 points. The last time the index hit a record at closure was with 60,328 points on the previous day.

European stocks also rose on Thursday, as strong earnings helped the market revive a week-long rally, but gains were limited as the Euro STOXX 50 failed to break a key resistance level for the third consecutive day.

At 1055 GMT, the FTSEurofirst 300 index of top European shares was up 0.5 percent at 1,056.28 points, rising for the seventh time in eight sessions. The Euro STOXX 50 was up 0.6 percent at 2,781.33 points, but failed to break above 2,790 for the third straight day, a level that was hit several times in May and June. The euro rose to $1.3077, its highest level since early May.

Around Europe, UK’s FTSE 100 index was up 0.8 percent, Germany’s DAX index up 0.6 percent and France’s CAC 40 up 0.5 percent.
