The Supreme Board of Judges and Prosecutors (HSYK), whose undemocratic structure will change if a proposed set of constitutional amendments is approved in a referendum scheduled for Sept. 12, has decided to promote 766 judges and 494 prosecutors, according to a report published in the Official Gazette yesterday.
The HSYK is one of the most controversial institutions in Turkey as it has interfered in major judicial cases -- such as the case into Ergenekon, a shadowy crime network that has alleged links within the state and is suspected of plotting to topple the government -- by replacing judges and prosecutors.
If the government-sponsored 26-article constitutional amendment package is approved by the public in the Sept. 12 referendum, the composition of the HSYK will drastically change in an effort to make the institution more democratic.
