Turkish students won four medals in the 42nd International Chemistry Olympiad, which took place in the Japanese capital of Tokyo from July 22-28.
A total of 280 students from over 70 countries participated in the competition. Deniz Çağlın and Fatih Alçiçek from İzmir’s private Yamanlar High School and Mehmet Şahiner from Ankara’s private Samanyolu High School won silver medals; Makbule Esen from İstanbul’s private Coşkun Science High School was awarded a gold medal. The students were selected for the competition by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK).

Turkey has won several awards in the annual competition, largely due to the students of Yamanlar High School. Sebahattin Kasap, the general director of the school, said on Wednesday that a large number of his students have won medals in other international competitions as well. Stating that they are very proud of the students’ success, Kasap added that they are always trying to raise the bar. “It’s obvious that our students are representing Turkey well in international competitions. Every time they return to this country with an award, it encourages us to keep doing what we do,” Kasap stated.
