Cyprus leaders to meet over dinner

28 July 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
Turkish Cypriot President Derviş Eroğlu and Greek Cypriot leader Dimitris Christofias will meet over dinner tonight to alleviate tension as the two leaders recently accused each other of being intransigent to a peaceful solution of the protracted dispute, involving a reunification of the long divided island.

Eroğlu and Christofias’s special aides Kudret Özersay and Yorgos Yakovu, along with UN Special Envoy to Cyprus Alexander Downer, will also be present during the dinner at the Turkish Cypriot president’s house, the Turkish Cypriot news agency (TAK) reported on Tuesday.

Eroğlu and Christofias have already met five times to find a lasting and peaceful settlement to the Cyprus conflict as a follow-up of a series of peace negotiations kicked off in September 2008.

Speaking to the news agency, Özersay said Eroğlu had also previously invited the Greek Cypriot leader for dinner but that only this time was Christofias’s response positive.

Saying that the Turkish Cypriot side believes the leaders’ gathering in social environments is a positive development with respect to furthering peace negotiations without any problems, Özersay added that President Eroğlu might also attend dinner at Christofias’s house in the future.
