Princes’ Islands getting own festival

28 July 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
This weekend the Princes’ Islands of İstanbul will get their very own festival when the inaugural edition of the three-day İstanbul Adalar Culture and Art Festival gets under way on Friday.
Organized by the Adalar Municipality in cooperation with the İstanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture Agency, the festival will feature an array of activities that include classical music, rock and jazz concerts, a photography exhibition, panel discussions with artists, dance shows and gastronomic shows.

All events in the festival, themed “İstanbul’s European Siblings,” will be held in various venues across Büyükada, the largest of the nine islands. The main venue of the festival is the square facing the Büyükada ferry and seabus piers. In accordance with the theme, the festival will this year host artists from Orestiada, the northernmost city of Greece.

The 30-piece Laogrifiko Musio Orestiadas choir and dance group, a trio of Turkish operatic tenors formed by Berk Özbek, Çelik Kasapoğlu and Dünya Kızılçay, the Tekfen Philharmonic Orchestra, Buzuki Orhan Osman and the rock band Apostrophe are among the acts to take to the stage during the festival. An exhibition by Greek photographer Nikos Manginas, a panel discussion on the art of painting with veteran artist Devrim Erbil and a tour of Büyükada’s gardens, in which the focus will be on the island’s architectural heritage, are some of the events on the festival’s bill.
