Turkish beauty queen dies in suspicious fall

23 July 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN WITH WIRES, İSTANBUL
Aslı Baş, a 32-year-old who won the Miss Model of the World title in 2003, died after a suspicious fall from the third-floor balcony of a villa while attending a cocktail party in Muğla on Tuesday night.
Some suggest Baş may have committed suicide, but nothing can be said for certain until an investigation is completed. On the night of her death Baş had been at a cocktail party thrown by Ahmet Bayer -- a tourism operator who reportedly cohabited with Baş -- along with her brother and some of her friends, for a total of seven people. Following the party at the triplex villa owned by Bayer, the guests chatted until around 3 a.m. Baş, who witnesses say was both cheery and tranquil at different points in the evening, made her way out to the balcony. The former beauty queen was allegedly under the influence of alcohol and reportedly fell to her death in front of the guests’ very eyes.

She fell about seven-and-a-half meters onto hard rocks below, and sustained serious injuries. She was rushed to Bodrum’s Universal Hospital by ambulance, but doctors were unable to save the woman, who had suffered brain trauma and multiple fractures throughout her body.

In their testimonies to investigators, Bayer and Baş’s older brother and friends said the woman had been using an antidepressant for about a month and that she had drank too much that night before going to and sitting on the edge of the balcony before meeting her unfortunate end.
