A member of the Socialists who declined to be named told the Anatolia news agency that the letter written by CHP Brussels representative Kader Sevinç drew huge reaction from the Socialist group due to the “rude and baseless” arguments in it.
The official said the group was planning to respond to the CHP after determining whether the letter had been written with the knowledge of CHP leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu. In the letter, Sevinç criticized Johannes Swoboda, the vice president of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament, who recently asked the CHP to support the constitutional reform, saying it promotes social democratic values.
The CHP, which describes itself as a social democrat party, has launched a campaign against the constitutional amendment package, with its new leader, Kılıçdaroğlu, declaring last week that voting down the measure during a referendum slated for Sept. 12 would benefit the country. Sevinç termed Swoboda’s statement “an obvious and scandalous attack” on the real struggle of the democratic forces in Turkey.
