Turkish foreign trade minister holds talks in Los Angeles

21 July 2010 / THE ANATOLIA NEWS AGENCY, LOS ANGELES
Turkish State Minister for foreign trade Zafer Çağlayan held Tuesday a series of talks in Los Angeles within the scope of his tour of USA.

Çağlayan, who proceeded to the western US city of Los Angeles from Chicago, visited the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce, the LA port and California Turkish American Chamber of Commerce (CATA).

Speaking during the visits, Çağlayan said his trip to the western US coast, which was the first visit paid by a Turkish foreign trade minister, aimed at determining mutual commercial, sectoral and geographical advantages.

Describing California as a state of opportunities, Çağlayan said the Turkish delegation visiting the state comprised of representatives of sectors that had the potential to sell more products to the US.

Pointing to Turkey's successful contractors who carry out infrastructure and superstructure projects in more than 80 countries, Çağlayan said Turkish contractors desired to enter the US market as well.

Commenting on the trade volume between Turkey and USA, which are two states with a strategic partnership for almost 60 years, Çağlayan said the volume could be increased remarkably if businessmen of the two countries got to know each other better.

Çağlayan noted that Turkey desired to become one of the top 10 economies in the world, reach a 1 trillion USD foreign trade volume and create at least 10 world-wide known brands by the year 2023.

"It is not hard to achieve these goals as we have a dynamic economy. Turkey is like a 300 hp car whose speed can rise up to 300 km/h. This trip is a roadshow for Turkey," he said.

Çağlayan also said that Turkey wanted peace and prosperity in its region and cooperated with USA in line with that goal.

Regarding the recent Israeli attack on Gaza-bound aid ship Mavi Marmara, Çağlayan said Turkey had no problems with Jewish people, adding the conflict had been created by the Israeli government.

Pointing to remarks claiming that Turkey's axis has shifted, Çağlayan said Turkey had political, commercial and diplomatic relations with all parts of the world, adding the country would never turn its back on the West.

Referring to Turkey's relations with Iran, Çağlayan said every development that took place in Iran concerned Turkey because the two countries were neighbors.

Commenting on Turkey's EU membership process as well, Çağlayan said some circles tried to hinder such process and the solution of Cyprus issue.

"We proceed on our way towards EU in a determined way," the minister said.
