Temperatures to rise in central, eastern areas

20 July 2010 / SÜMEYRA TALAZ , ANKARA
Temperatures are set to rise by 2-4 degrees Celsius in central and eastern regions of Turkey this week, while the weather will remain stable in most other places, meteorologists have said.
In the afternoon today, the inland Aegean and the Eskişehir areas are expected to see precipitation and some thunderstorms. The national forecast predicts light, westerly and southwesterly winds in the southern Aegean, Mediterranean, north and northeastern regions of Turkey, while strong, intermittent winds are expected in coastal areas along the Marmara and the rest of the Aegean.

Clear skies await the public in most of the Marmara, Aegean, Mediterranean, Central Anatolia and Black Sea regions. Intermittent showers are forecast for some Black Sea areas, in addition to Erzurum, Kars, Ardahan, Ağrı and Iğdır.

The warm summer weather has brought domestic and foreign tourists to Aydın’s Kuşadası district in droves, as well as other popular seasonal hotspots. Local tourism operators are pleased with the weather and say occupancy rates are high, and both beachside and inland tourism in the area are doing better than ever.

Meanwhile, the Antalya Zoo is developing new methods to deal with the scorching summer heat. Zookeepers recently installed a new water sprinkler system, traditionally used to water agricultural fields, to provide brief periods of showers to help animals keep cool in the summer. “We’ve taken various precautions at the zoo to deal with extreme temperatures,” zoo manager Süleyman Karaca said.
