2 killed, 12 injured in heated dispute over children

Two people died and 12 others were injured after a dispute broke out between two families over their children in the southeastern province of Batman on Sunday.

According to news reports, a verbal dispute between the Taşan and Cengiz families turned violent after the families started using stones and guns. Tacettin Cengiz (59) and his relative Halef Erin (45) died at the scene of the confrontation, on Zübeyda Hanım Street, while members of the Cengiz family -- Mehmet Ali, Hayrettin, Mehmet Şerif, Mahmut and Hayriye Cengiz -- and members of the Taşan family -- Sırrı, Süleyman Erin, Abdullah, Müslüm, Cengiz, Misbah and Nefise Taşan -- were injured. The injured people were immediately taken to hospitals throughout the city.

An investigation has been launched into the event by police officers and 10 people were detained, according to initial reports. News reports noted that the reason behind the dispute was not clear, but it is believed that the families’ dispute started over their children.
