Promotions of 163 officers in question

17 July 2010 / GÖKSEL GENÇ, İSTANBUL
More than 163 military officers, including 13 generals, are being tried as suspects in the Ergenekon, Balyoz (Sledgehammer), Poyrazköy and Kafes (Cage) trials, accused of planning a coup d’état, but the fate of their careers is still unclear as the Supreme Military Council (YAŞ) has promoted such controversial individuals before, in spite of a law that clearly states that such individuals may not be promoted.

According to Article 65 of the Personnel Law of the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK), officers either arrested, released pending trial or those whose verdict has not been handed down cannot be promoted. As a result, the promotion process of the 163 military officers standing trial is expected to be halted.

Top-level commanders are among the officers who are not eligible for promotion. Among the military officers who are expected not to be promoted at the YAŞ meeting in August because they are standing trial in terror-related cases, even though they are next in line for promotion, are Lt. Gen. Nejat Bek, Maj. Gen. Gürbüz Kaya, Maj. Gen. Ahmet Yavuz, Maj. Gen. Salim Erkal Bektaş, Maj. Gen. Abdullah Dalay, Maj. Gen. Halil Helvacıoğlu, Brig. Gen. Kasım Erden, Vice Adm. Mehmet Otuzbiroğlu and Rear Adm. Mustafa Karasabun.
