Blogging good income earner and career path, says expert

Turkish blog platform blogcu.com gets 1.2 million visits daily.
16 July 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
There are currently 2.5 million blogs registered on the Turkish website blogcu.com and about 130 million on the world wide web, offering advertising income and even career opportunities for their writers.
Tümay Asena, CEO of Nokta Medya, the owner of Turkish blog platform blogcu.com, which gets 1.2 million visits daily, told the Anatolia news agency that a blog with good content could earn its writer about $200 a month on average, while blogs that have turned into “microsites” can bring up to $1,000.

Asena said blogging in Turkey is most widespread among the younger population, with 40 percent of authors being between 20 and 30. About 18 percent of bloggers are between 30 and 40, while 30 percent are between 10 and 20. An overwhelming 78 percent of blog writers in Turkey are men, while 28 percent are women.

He said that blog writer is a reputable title on the Internet, stating that everyone who is savvy about the Internet starts a blog but gives up after some time. “There are currently more than 1.2 million blogs created on blogcu.com. The number of those who have not updated at all in the past two months is around 200,000.”

A majority of the blogs written between the first of the year and the current month are about cinema and television, followed by music, sports, technology and personal hobbies, Asena said. He also stated that this indicates a shift in the trend for food and hobby blogs that were dominant between 2007 and 2009. Daily affairs including arts, culture and cinema are now more popular topics to blog about, while there are specific blogs that concentrate solely on publishing pictures of Harry Potter and his friends or the scripts of all movies with Morgan Freeman.

With some technical know-how, a blog can easily turn into a “microsite,” Asena said. He noted that the most visited blog on their website has been xxxecemxxx.blogcu for a long time, a site that includes various topics from humor and recipes to lyrics and information on education. He noted that an important point in a blog’s popularity was its updating frequency, noting that frequent updates also helped a blog get indexed by search engines more often.

Other popular blogs on blogcu.com include political commentary site blog karsiyorum.blogcu.com; cooking and recipe blog emelinmutfagi.blogcu.com; odevistan.blogcu.com, which helps students with school assignments; teknolojihaber.blogcu.com, offering technology news; and redbutterfly.blogcu.com, a knitting-hobby site that also includes fashion and housekeeping tips.

Making money with our blog

Asena stated that for a blog to make money, it has to have a certain volume of daily visitors. He said blogs that manage to transform into microsites are interesting for big brands. There are various ways of advertising, from decorating the blog with the visuals of a particular brand or company to having the blogger test and then write about a product of the company.

He said a blog that offers original content, frequent and consistent updates and quality is a blog likely to be successful.

Another rising trend for advertisers is to use popular blogs or create their own campaign blogs for a product as a communication medium to provide for closer interaction with their consumers, noting that the content of a blog can now be shared on Facebook and Twitter with only a button. He noted that the Frito-Lay Group ran an advertising campaign for its chips brand Lay’s solely on a blog that received about 500,000 users in the past month and a half. He said other brands that opted to use blogs for advertising included such giants as Renault, Dacia, Opel, Dalin, Knorr and Tat.

He stated that over time, writers of successful blogs could become representatives for a certain brand. “Say a fashion blogger can work with Reebok while a financial blogger can end up working with Garanti Bank,” noting that blogs could also earn their owners careers. Other companies that have chosen bloggers for their campaigns include Efes Pilsen and Pireli.

Another perk that comes with the “job” is the opportunity to meet representatives of technology companies such as Microsoft or Nokia, as managers of these companies like to have meetings with bloggers from time to time for different reasons, which is another advantage that opens new career opportunities.
