Speaking to reporters in Ankara, Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek said the government expected to meet investors’ increasing demands for new land and that his ministry recently designated 289 separate pieces of land owned by the Treasury in 25 provinces to this end. Noting that studies are underway to select additional Treasury land to be sold to private owners, Şimşek said they would announce the new lands for sale in this October.
In a bid to increase financial resources for the government budget as well as to encourage new private investment across the country, the Finance Ministry is marketing lands owned by the Treasury that are registered in the records of the General Directorate of National Real Estate (Milli Emlak). Studies show investors are more willing to purchase real estate from the state because they think there is a higher risk that they will be deceived in normal property trade in the market.
As regards new large investments, the minister said the government has accelerated studies on the establishment of the Filyos Free Trade Zone in the Black Sea province of Zonguldak. Noting that it could serve as a prominent port to foreign markets for the Central Anatolia region, the minister said the government expects the Filyos Free Trade Zone attract large investments from both local and foreign entrepreneurs.
Also making mention of the sale of public recreational facilities, the minister recalled that the state earned a total of TL 36.3 million from the sale of 32 recreational facilities between the years 2002 and 2010. The minister also said the national real estate revenues had increased by 25 percent in the first five months of 2010 over the same months of last year.
Recalling that the Treasury owns 779 recreational facilities in different provinces, the minister said the Finance Ministry will sell 12 facilities in the provinces of İstanbul, Ankara, İzmir, Adana, Antalya, Muğla and Bursa between Aug. 2 and 6.
Şimşek said these 12 facilities, anticipated to have a total value of TL 152 million, offer serious and profitable investment opportunities as they are located on some prominent tourism and trade routes.
Şimşek asserted that the government expects that the sale of public recreational facilities will result in new investments which will contribute to the development of different regions. “New investments -- mostly tourism facilities -- will eventually reflect on employment. The state will also increase its tax revenues,” he explained.
