Quran courses raided in KKTC, operate freely on Greek island

7 July 2010 / SELAHATTIN SEVI, İSTANBUL
While teachers resorting to illegal raids have been able to successfully put a stop to the operation of elective summer religious classes in the KKTC, on the Greek island of Kos Muslim children are rushing to the mosques this summer without a problem. Youths from Turkish Cyprus are also heading for Turkey to spend a month as boarding students so they can receive a basic religious education, and on Kos, where many Turkish and migrant Muslims live, a segment of the summer is spent in the classroom for those who wish to do so.

On Kos Island there is no information on Islam contained in the regular middle school curriculum, so the summer is seen as a time for Muslim children to “catch up” on basic religious knowledge. Imam Şükrü Damadoğlu, originally from Western Thrace, came here temporarily during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan 17 years ago and decided to stay. He teaches one of the Quran courses, which has over 35 students, about half of them female.

Instructional tools for his course include not just religious texts but plasma TVs and computers, he explains, adding that they are under no pressure from the Greek government. “We’re able to solve most problems by talking to school administrators. We don’t send Muslim kids to religious courses taught by clergy, and they are understanding about this. We try to make up for the information on Islam that they miss in school through the summer courses,” he explained.
