Aydoğdu made his controversial speech, titled “Tutelage and System Discussions,” during the Abant Platform in northwestern Turkey on Friday. “It is an unfortunate event that the DP did not send İsmet İnönü, the former leader of the CHP, to a peaceful place in history, closing the CHP,” he said during his speech.
The CHP reacted harshly to the speech. “A governor must be a governor. A governor is representative of the government and the state. It is not a governor’s job to question history. If he needs to make such a speech, he must quit his post and join the Justice and Development Party [AK Party] and do politics. Then we will respond to him. Now, we don’t consider him worthy of an answer,” CHP leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu said on Saturday in Antalya. The Interior Ministry launched an investigation into Aydoğdu’s speech on Sunday and appointed an inspector to carry out the inquiry.
Aydoğdu spoke to reporters in Kırklareli on Monday, saying: “My speech was a historical evaluation. I am glad that an investigation was launched.” He also added that he agreed with Kılıçdaroğlu, who said governors should not get involved in politics, saying: “I agree with him on his statements about governors’ relationships with politics. The law also says so. We think so. Of course, he is right; governors do not deal with politics. Of course I implement the program of the government. I don’t find a differentiation between state and government to be right.” The governor mentioned that his statement was seen as a political one today in the media and that he had neither the authority nor the intention to talk about the CHP. “We try to carry out the tasks given to us by the state in an impartial manner,” he said.
