KKTC goes to polls to elect deputy, local administrators
Five candidates, including President Eroğlu’s daughter Resmiye Canaltay, competed in Gazimağusa for the seat vacated by Eroğlu, who won the presidential election on April 18. Canaltay was favored to win her father’s former seat; she is running on the ruling National Unity Party (UBP) list, Eroğlu’s former party.
There are more than 160,000 registered voters in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (KKTC). Voters cast votes at 633 ballot boxes across the country to elect 28 mayors, 268 municipal assembly members and 148 village headmen. Both the local elections and the Gazimağusa vote lasted until 6 p.m.
Eroğlu, meanwhile, was in New York yesterday for talks with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon about ongoing Cyprus peace talks to reunify the long-divided island. The two were due to meet late on Sunday.
