Hours after MGK declaration to fight PKK, attack kills 3

26 June 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
Two soldiers and one civilian were killed on Thursday in an armed attack on a military convoy in eastern Elazığ province. The attack came only a few hours after the National Security Council (MGK) issued a statement in which it reiterated its strong determination not to bow to acts of violence by the terrorist Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

“Turkey’s will to continue the fight against the threat of terror until it is eradicated has once again been confirmed,” read the MGK statement. The council convened to talk about new measures to take against the increase in terrorist attacks of the PKK. According to the MGK statement, the acts of terror and violence by the terrorist organization, which targets the unity and solidarity of Turkey, will never manage to achieve their objective thanks to the determination of the Turkish state and nation.

The council also called on the public to be patient and calm in the face of the recent escalation in terrorist attacks.

“In the efficient fight against terrorism, which targets the people’s right to life and is a crime against fundamental human rights, we have underscored the importance of international cooperation and reiterated our call on friendly and neighboring countries to offer their assistance,” the statement added.

Only hours after the statement, however, the terrorist PKK targeted a military convoy in Elazığ and killed two soldiers and one civilian. Four civilians and one soldier were also injured in the attack.

Newspapers identified the slain civilian as Şerife Gezici, 70. One of the wounded civilians, Bedriye Gezici, was in critical condition. Elazığ Governor Muammer Erol said terrorists opened fire on a military convoy around 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The convoy was taking soldiers to the Yoğunağaç gendarmerie outpost.

According to the governor, security forces stepped up security measures in the province after the terrorist attack. “We witnessed such attacks in the Yoğunaçay district many years ago. This is the first time such an attack has occurred in the district in years,” he said.
