The victim was identified as Esin Doğan, the wife of Özgür Doğan, who was also swept away in floods and found dead on Thursday.Esin Doğan’s body was located near the coast by fishermen, who immediately informed the police. Police discovered that the body was that of Doğan, who was missing since Wednesday. Doğan’s body was sent to the Darıca Farabi State Hospital for an autopsy.
Heavy downpour increased in intensity late on Wednesday night, disrupting life in some of Turkey’s provinces, particularly Kocaeli and İstanbul. Hundreds of homes and workplaces were flooded, leaving locals faced with the messy task of cleaning up. The torrential rain caused flash floods in cities, and a large number of vehicles were stranded on various highways. In addition, two manufacturing plants in İstanbul’s Tuzla district were forced to halt production because of flooding.
The Gebze Institute of Technology (GYTE) in Kocaeli’s Gebze district was among the places that were flooded. Abidin Aytemur, the general manager of disaster affairs of the GYTE, noted that the GYTE was inundated within 15 minutes. Speaking to the Anatolia news agency on Thursday, Aytemur said it wasn’t possible to reach the GYTE except by tractor.
