Turkey sends aid to victims of violence in Kyrgyzstan

24 June 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
Turkey has stepped up aid to strife-torn regions with a cargo plane containing 38 tons of humanitarian aid being sent to the Andizhan region of Uzbekistan on Tuesday to where thousands of ethnic Uzbeks fled after nearly a week of brutal violence in southern Kyrgyzstan, a Foreign Ministry statement said on Wednesday.

The statement also added that Turkey had sent 12 tons of humanitarian aid to the city of Osh in Kyrgyzstan, the epicenter of most of the violence, in addition to the 15 tonnes of humanitarian relief that was sent 10 days ago by the Turkish Red Crescent (Kızılay).

In addition to Kızılay's cargo planes which were carrying food, kitchen kits, blankets and medical equipment to ravaged southern Kyrgyzstan, other private humanitarian relief organizations have also sent several cargo planes to the region.

The UN announced on Friday that more than 1 million people have been affected by the violent conflict in Kyrgyzstan and need food and other aid supplies. They include some 400,000 people left homeless after fleeing ethnic clashes in the southern cities of Osh and Jalal-Abad that erupted a week ago. Some 300,000 have been displaced within Kyrgyzstan while another 100,000 people have crossed over into Uzbekistan.
