‘Democratic initiative flaws lead to violence’

23 June 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, ANKARA
Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) co-Chairwoman Gülten Kışanak has tied the recent escalation in Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) terrorist attacks to the government’s failure to carry out a real democratic initiative.

Speaking at her party’s parliamentary group meeting yesterday, she said if politicians failed to find a solution to the Kurdish problem with calm and reason, “a process of armed conflict as in the ‘90s would be inevitable.” She started her speech expressing condolences to the families of the victims. She argued that Turkey was rapidly being dragged into a blind war. “If the clashes are on again the party responsible for that is the government, which has managed a policy of elimination, calling it an ‘initiative’.”

Kışanak said her party has been issuing warnings for a long time, but the government has failed to heed them. “You cannot solve this by killing those on the mountain [those bearing arms] and sending those on the plains [PKK supporters in urban areas] to jail.” She said the Kurdish question was Turkey’s soft underbelly and that the country should stop waging a war on its own people.
