One soldier dies in Diyarbakır PKK attack

23 June 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN WITH WIRES, İSTANBUL
One soldier was killed and three villagers injured on Monday in a clash that erupted after the terrorist Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) attacked a military outpost in the southeastern province of Diyarbakır.

Terrorists opened fire on the Bağdere gendarmerie outpost in the Silvan district late on Monday. Soldiers returned fire, resulting in a clash in which Cpl. Salih Albayrak was killed. A village guard and two villagers who were passing by were also injured in the clash.

The General Staff announced in a statement on Tuesday that five terrorists involved in the clash were captured by security forces. The General Staff also said the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) killed two PKK terrorists and captured one in a separate operation carried out in the northeastern province of Gümüşhane on Monday. The General Staff said in an announcement on its website that a clash erupted in Gümüşhane’s Kelkit district late on Monday between terrorists and security forces. The statement said two terrorists were killed and one apprehended along with their weapons.

Meanwhile, seven members of the PKK surrendered to Turkish security forces on Monday after they escaped from PKK camps in northern Iraq. The deserters reportedly sought to benefit from Article 221 of the Turkish Penal Code (TCK), popularly known as the Active Repentance Law. The article stipulates that terrorists who surrender to security forces will be released without punishment as long as they have not been involved in any armed clashes with security forces or any terrorist attacks against Turkey. They were released on the grounds that they were not involved in violence.

Attacks by the terrorist organization have escalated in recent months. Most recently, 11 soldiers were killed in a terrorist attack staged by PKK terrorists on Saturday.
