Vienna Philharmonic’s anticipated İstanbul concert tonight

23 June 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
Around 3,000 festival goers will be treated to a memorable musical feast in İstanbul tonight when the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra makes its eagerly anticipated appearance at the Haliç Convention Center.
Under the baton of world-renowned Italian maestro Riccardo Muti, the Vienna Philharmonic will perform in the convention center’s 3,000-plus seat concert hall to present a program of symphonies by Mozart and Schubert -- two great composers associated with Vienna -- in addition to Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece, “Pathétique.”

Tonight’s concert is part of this year’s İstanbul International Music Festival and will be the first time the orchestra has played in Turkey under the baton of Muti, who has enjoyed a close relationship with the Vienna Philharmonic for many years. The concert will be preceded by a pre-concert lecture by Clemens Hellsberg, the chairman of the Vienna Philharmonic, who will deliver a speech titled “The History of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and its Prominent Figures” at the convention center from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
