Akın will preside over the five-member Luigi De Laurentiis Award jury, who will choose among all the debut feature films in the festival’s various competitive sections, the festival’s board of directors announced on the festival’s website (www.labiennale.org). The winner will take home the Lion of the Future -- Luigi De Laurentiis Award along with a cash prize of $100,000, to be shared equally between the director and producer.The 67th Venice Film Festival will run from Sept. 1-11 under the direction of Marco Müller. US director-screenwriter Quentin Tarantino will chair the international jury for the festival’s main competition, which will award the coveted Golden Lion, as well as other official prizes. The official lineup will be announced in a news conference in Rome at the end of July.
The 37-year-old Akın is one of the most significant young-generation filmmakers in European cinema. In addition to the Venice special jury prize in 2009 for “Soul Kitchen,” Akın won the Golden Bear prize for “Gegen die Wand” (Head-on) at the 2004 Berlin Film Festival and his “Auf der anderen Seite” (The Edge of Heaven) won best screenplay in the 2007 Cannes Film Festival.
