“Terrorism has become the number-one problem of Turkey as of today. I will not be content with just condemning terrorism here today.
Nor will I talk about how we knew the attacks would escalate, that there are secret forces that do not want democratization, that the government has balancing problems both inside and outside, that there are weaknesses in security we are not aware of, how experienced the military is in fighting terrorism, of those who are waiting for a comment from Pennsylvania, of how a party cannot get rid of its references to İmralı and about the initiatives which are about to be lost before they have even materialized,” Boyner said, addressing a meeting on “Regional Development and the Role of the Business World” in Trabzon organized by TÜSİAD and the Turkish Enterprise and Business Confederation (TÜRKONFED).
She said that words are not enough to address the problem today and that everybody should say “no” to a mentality that “normalizes terrorism.”
“The fight against terrorism is of concern to every one of us. We have to take responsibility. Of course the state, with its administrators and institutions and its infrastructure, is the foremost responsible actor here. One of the most important measures of being a developed country is the value that a state attaches to its citizens. The state is responsible for taking measures to protect its citizens’ right to life. If it cannot do this, it should be held accountable,” she said. She also noted that as citizens of this country, they, the business world, desire to live in a country where terrorism is not in the news. She added that they are ready to contribute to the solution and that they will be watchful of the process.
Meanwhile, Parliament Speaker Mehmet Ali Şahin, answering reporters’ questions regarding his Sunday remarks about the accountability of those responsible for protecting citizens, said yesterday that the General Staff recently made a statement addressing questions regarding the fight against terrorism.
“It is my duty to express the feelings of the nation as the speaker of Parliament, because Parliament is an institution of inspection as well as legislation, in line with its duties in the system of separation of powers,” he said.
On Sunday, he had said that the military should offer a satisfactory explanation regarding the escalating terror attacks.
