Davutoğlu to discuss Kyrgyzstan unrest with Kazakh officials

21 June 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
On Sunday, Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu began a two-day visit to Kazakhstan, currently chairing the rotating presidency of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), to discuss methods of dealing with the unrest in Kyrgyzstan.

The foreign minister is set to meet with Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev and Foreign Minister Kanat Saudabayev during his visit to the capital, Astana, the Kazakhstan foreign ministry announced in a statement released on Saturday. Officials from both countries are also expected to discuss bilateral relations and ways of improving their already strong ties.

In a speech in Parliament on Wednesday, Davutoğlu said a joint action plan to deal with the Kyrgyz incidents is under way with Kazakhstan, and in light of a report that Kazakhi and Turkish delegations will prepare, Turkey and Kazakhstan will take action on strife-torn Kyrgyzstan.

Davutoğlu said Turkey will act on behalf of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA) and Kazakhstan on behalf of the OSCE once the reports are ready. Turkey and Kazakhstan are chairing the rotating term presidencies of CICA and the OSCE, respectively, this year.
