Inmate thought to have escaped hid in prison for 1 month

19 June 2010 / ORHAN KARANFİL , KOCAELİ
It has emerged that an inmate at the Kocaeli C-Type Prison thought to have escaped was actually hiding within the prison complex for a month.
The continued presence at the prison of assumed escapee Rafet Yıldırım, convicted on charges of theft, was discovered by prison guards as he tried to steal food from the kitchen. Sentenced in 2009 to 15 years in prison for theft, Yıldırım had begun to work as a tea server at the prison as a reward for good behavior. During an inmate headcount on May 18, Yıldırım could not be located and was thought to have escaped. A thorough search of the facility for leads as to his whereabouts turned up nothing.

A wide-ranging investigation into the disappearance was started, with pictures of Yıldırım distributed to police stations for posting. After a full month, Yıldırım was caught at around 4 a.m. while trying to steal food from the prison kitchen. The ensuing investigation revealed that the inmate had hidden underneath the stage in the prison theater for a month. In order to avoid detection, he had brought a bed underneath the stage and ate his meals there.

And his reason? Reportedly Yıldırım had gotten into an argument with a prison guard and, in a move intended to get that guard in trouble, hid for a month. Yıldırım has testified to the prosecutor investigating the case and will be tried on charges of “attempted escape.”
