The Ankara Police Department’s Organized Crime and Narcotics Unit detained a large number of people, wanted for various crimes, yesterday at dawn in surprise raids on different locations in the Mamak and Altındağ districts.
During the raids, police seized weapons, narcotics and some cash from the homes and vehicles of the suspects. The majority of homes searched during the raid -- conducted with the support of the riot police, police tanks, special operations units and the police safety unit -- were in the Gülveren area. Police helicopters assisted the operations by following those suspects who were trying to escape. The operations started at 5:15 a.m. on Friday, reports said.Luxury automobiles in front of the homes of the suspects, located in slum areas, were a surprising sight for the officers. No official details were given on the number of people arrested or the contents found during the raid. Police said they would make a detailed statement once the initial interrogation of the suspects is complete. Sources said the raid was a culmination of seven months of investigation into a narcotics ring.
The suspects were accused of selling drugs to local children and complaints filed by residents of the neighborhoods searched in yesterday’s operation aided the probe a great deal, police sources said.
