Republican People’s Party (CHP) Edirne Mayor Hamdi Sedefçi will resign from party membership due to corruption charges, saying he will not be returning until he is cleared of the allegations.
The Edirne 1st and 2nd High Criminal Courts sentenced Sedefçi to 12 years, six months in prison for conspiring to rig three bids. Speaking at a press conference in Edirne on Tuesday, Sedefçi said he believed that he will be cleared of all charges by the high court but that he will step down from party membership so he does not negatively affect the party’s image. “I will apply to resign from the party until I am cleared of these accusations. I will work for the CHP to come to power. I will serve my party,” he said. While underlining that the CHP administration did not ask him to quit, Sedefçi said he made the decision in order not to damage the party further.
