Turkey to turn into communications bridge with JADI LINK

17 June 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
A project to build a huge integrated multi-pass fiber optic network between Jeddah, Amman, Damascus and İstanbul kicked off yesterday in İstanbul, making Turkey a communication gateway to the world for the region.

Titled JADI LINK, the project will be jointly conducted by Türk Telekom, the Saudi Telecom Company (STC), the Jordan Telecom Group (JTG) and the Syrian Telecommunications Establishment. The network will cover a wide area from Europe to the Middle East and the Far East via Turkey, Syria, Jordan and Saudi Arabia, turning Turkey into a communication bridge between Europe and Asia. The JADI LINK will also be the shortest and an entirely terrestrial alternative route to submarine cable networks crossing the Mediterranean and Red seas. A ceremony was held yesterday to celebrate the start of the project which was attended by Transportation Minister Binali Yıldırım, Marwan Juma, Jordan’s minister of information and communications technology, along with executives from the four countries’ telecommunication companies.

Yıldırım noted in a speech at the ceremony that the network will connect Asia and Europe via “communication highways.” Its contribution to global communication will be enormous, the minister stated.
