Tax case against Uzans dropped over statute of limitations

16 June 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
The trial of Kemal and Yavuz Uzan over charges of “opposition to the Tax Procedural Law” has been dropped due to the five-year statute of limitations.
In a hearing at the İstanbul 2nd High Criminal Court yesterday, state prosecutor Orhan Erbay recalled that the offenses in question took place between 1999 and 2003, Erbay said, and on April 8, 2005, a sentence in absentia was issued for Kemal and Yavuz Uzan, who could not be located to face charges and submit defense statements. The Uzans are still on the run and the five-year statute of limitations has been reached, Erbay noted, requesting that the panel of judges drop the case against the men in accordance with the law. The judges agreed and ruled accordingly.
