Jeffrey informs Doğan’s father of raid inquiry developments

11 June 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
The US ambassador to Turkey has stated that the US administration will help push Israel to establish a commission investigating Israel’s violent raid on a Gaza-bound aid convoy carrying humanitarian aid to Palestinians which left nine dead and dozens injured, while speaking via phone with the father of one of the victims.

US Ambassador to Turkey James Jeffrey reportedly called the father of Furkan Doğan, a US citizen who was killed during the Israeli raid, on Wednesday to inform him of the latest developments surrounding the inquiry and the US government’s close monitoring of the situation.

Speaking to the Anatolia news agency, Ahmet Doğan, Furkan Doğan’s father, who currently resides in Turkey, said Jeffrey told him that the US Embassy had received information regarding Doğan from Turkish authorities and will forward the relevant reports to Doğan’s family.

Doğan added that the US ambassador informed him that they will continue to brief him on developments and that the US administration is sensitive to and focused on the subject. “There is no reason to not launch an inquiry. The ambassador said the US will help establish a commission to investigate the incident,” Doğan noted.

Meanwhile, Mahmut Tural, the captain of the Mavi Marmara, which was overrun by Israeli commandos on May 31, visited Doğan to express his condolences.

Tural said the 19-year-old Doğan’s death had uncovered Israel’s true face. Stressing that they were in international waters during the incident and never crossed into Israeli territorial waters, Tural said the incident happened 73 miles off the coast and called it a clear violation of international law. “We were always going to stay out of Israeli waters,” Tural noted. The captain also added that they would prepare a detailed report regarding the coordinates of their voyage.
