Tests reveal injuries sustained by activists at hands of Israelis

8 June 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
About 80 percent of the peace activists who were on a humanitarian aid flotilla en route to Gaza that was stormed by Israeli commandos last week have been discovered to be suffering from internal injuries, in medical tests conducted at the Council of Forensic Medicine (ATK) in İstanbul on Thursday.

Out of 433 activists, 368 underwent blood tests at the ATK where the effects of Israeli torture on the activists were examined. An increase in enzymes that destroy the muscles and liver leading to the breakdown of physical chemistry was detected in the blood samples of around 80 percent of the activists. Experts evaluated these results as a consequence of damage sustained by the internal organs from beatings. The test results are expected to be used as evidence in the investigations launched by the Ankara and İstanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s offices.

The results of toxicology tests examining the liquids consumed by the activists are still pending. Experts say the toxicological examinations may take a couple of weeks. The water drunk by the activists was suspected of being biologically contaminated. The fact that Israel has not signed the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention had boosted the fear.

The activists were discovered to have been subjected to physical and psychological torture when they underwent examinations at the ATK. The blows sustained by each activist were detected and recorded with photographs. An examination for radioactivity revealed that the activists were radiation free.

They activists were interviewed by experts in psychiatry at the ATK to enable reports to be prepared on the state of their health as part of a legal process. Psychiatric support will be provided to the activists if requested, but no requests have been received thus far.
