Turkey’s boron exports drop 26 percent amid global crisis

3 June 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
Boron exports from Turkey, which holds more than 70 percent of the world’s boron reserves, plunged last year due to the global financial crisis, which also resulted in a contraction in global demand.

A recent report compiled by Eti Maden, Turkey’s state-owned boron producer, has shown Turkey suffered a 26 percent slump in exports in 2009, to 1.1 million tons, over the previous year, a drop largely attributable to the turmoil in global finances. Eti Maden saw revenue of $451 million from boron exports in 2009. Global boron consumption fell by 26.3 percent in 2009 from a year earlier, down to 2.9 million tons, while the world’s total boron production dropped by 19 percent, to 3.29 million tons, in the same period. Turkey, Russia and the US are the largest boron producers in the world.

Eti Maden expects to expand Turkey’s share in the world boron market from 36 percent to 39 percent by 2013, increasing exports to $1 billion. Sixty-three countries purchase boron from Turkey. Eti Maden ships most of its boron to Europe, the Far East and the US.
