“As a frantic state, Israel attacks every corner as though it has gone mad. If Israel dares to act like a killer state, it is mainly because the United States fails to take a position against it,” the professor told Today’s Zaman.Nine people were killed and dozens injured by Israeli authorities in the wake of a bloody pre-dawn raid on a large group of activists taking humanitarian aid to war-stricken Gaza on Monday. The real number of casualties is, however, believed to be higher.
According to Finkelstein, the Israeli attack on defenseless civilians on the aid convoy was inhumane. “Israel does not act like a frantic state anymore. It has really become a frantic state rather than an unsuccessful or bandit state,” he noted. A convoy of six boats was taking humanitarian aid and hundreds of activists to Gaza on Monday when it was attacked by Israeli naval commandos. Soldiers opened fire on the activists, killing at least nine and injuring many. Most of the injured were Turkish citizens. Israeli sources announced yesterday that 360 Turks were arrested.
“Israel would not have dared to launch such a disgusting attack if the US administration had announced that it would not tolerate [it]. However, it was the US itself that remained silent when Rachel Corrie was killed by Israel,” Finkelstein added.
Corrie was a young American activist killed by an Israeli bulldozer on March 16, 2003 as she tried to stop the demolition of a Palestinian family’s home in the Gaza Strip.
