Israeli Embassy in Ankara tightens security measures

1 June 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, ANKARA
Riot police teams from the Ankara Police Department surrounded the Israel Embassy building yesterday to protect the embassy from angry protestors protesting Israel’s attack on a humanitarian aid ship from Turkey on Monday.

The attacked vessel was part of a six-ship flotilla carrying international activists and politicians wanting to bring humanitarian aid to Gaza under an Israeli blockade. Protests broke out in every city of Turkey, including the capital.

Protestors gathered in the early hours of Monday in front of the Israeli Consulate in İstanbul. In Ankara, police were on high alert. Roads leading to the Israeli Embassy were closed to traffic. There were also security measures at Protocol Road, where Ambassador Gaby Levy resides. At least 16 on board were killed, but Israeli officials have yet to disclose a list of names of those shot, injured or arrested. The whereabouts of the passengers was also not clear. The Israeli Foreign Ministry told Today’s Zaman that they were removing the passengers from the ship.
