As Turkey follows the 8th Turkish Language Olympiads, a student from Fatih University in İstanbul has placed first in the 9th Chinese Bridge World University Chinese competition’s Turkey semifinals.

Sadık Kağıtçı, who studies Chinese literature at Fatih University, the host of the semifinals, said he is pleased he chose to study Chinese.

“Chinese, which is growing in importance, is key for me. I’ll represent Turkey well,” he said yesterday as he accepted his award from China’s İstanbul Consul General Zhang Zhiliang at Fatih University’s Büyükçekmece campus. Kağıtçı competed with students hailing from more than 100 countries in the competition, organized by the Chinese Embassy in Ankara, China’s İstanbul Consulate General, Bogazici University’s Confucius Institute and Fatih University. Students were judged in poetry, dance, special abilities and reading. Last year the competition was held at the İstanbul consulate. Consul General Zhiliang said Chinese has become a world language as China has become a growing power in the economic and social arenas. Finalists from the many semifinals held worldwide will compete against each other in China on July 1.
