Anxious wait continues for families of aid convoy activists

1 June 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
Families of the activists who were onboard an international aid convoy bound for Gaza that was brutally attacked by Israeli soldiers yesterday are waiting anxiously to hear if their loved ones are safe and sound.

Up to 19 activists were killed after Israeli forces attacked the convoy dubbed the Freedom Flotilla. There was no information about the identities of those who had been killed by the time Today’s Zaman went to print.

More than 600 activists from 42 countries, mainly European, were on board.

Yaşar Sarıtürk, the brother of Murat Sarıtürk, an activist from Kahramanmaraş, said he was concerned for his brother’s life and asked that the authorities inform them of the latest situation.

Erol Tansel is another of five activists from Kahramanmaraş who were with the flotilla. Birol Tansel, his brother, said he was ready to fight to find out what had happened to those on board.

The family members of Mine Karakaş, an official from the Humanitarian Aid Foundation (İHH), who reside in Bursa, said they were deeply concerned for their daughter’s life.

Karakaş’s father, Hamdi, said he was looking forward to hearing his daughter’s voice and strongly condemns the Israeli attack, expressing sorrow for those who had been killed and injured.

Firdevs Sarımsakçı, the wife of another activist, Fethi Sarımsakçı, who joined the aid project from Bolu, also conveyed her concern for her husband. “I spoke to my husband after the ships set sail on Thursday. I have had no contact with him since then. I am extremely concerned for his life. Our entire family is very upset as there has been no news from the convoy so far. We would like to know whether my husband is alive or dead,” she said. Around 1,000 people, including members of the Sarımsakçı family, participated in a demonstration in Bolu’s Hükümet Square to condemn Israel.

The Association of Human Rights and Solidarity for Oppressed Peoples (MAZLUM-DER) Kayseri branch head, Ahmet Taş, said there were nine Kayseri residents among the activists on board the aid convoy. He said no contact has yet been established with any of them so far, adding that their families were getting more and more anxious about their situation.
