Fidan, who became the MİT deputy-undersecretary last month, succeeded Taner, who had served in the post for almost five years, on Tuesday. The new MİT head is 42 and was born in Ankara. He served in the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) as a noncommissioned officer for 15 years between 1986 and 2001. During his time in the military, he also worked at NATO’s Germany-based Allied Rapid Reaction Corps (ARRC). He later resigned from the military and worked as a political and economic consultant at the Australian Embassy in Ankara. Having received an undergraduate degree in management and political science at the University of Maryland University College (UMUC), he earned a master’s degree and a doctorate at Bilkent University in Ankara. His last post before his new career at the MİT was at the Prime Ministry as a deputy-undersecretary. He made many little-publicized visits to various regions with the prime minister’s then-chief adviser on foreign policy Ahmet Davutoğlu. He accompanied the head of government on all his visits abroad and meetings with leaders of other countries.
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan expressed his confidence in the new MİT head. “The organization’s primary task concerns foreign intelligence, and our new undersecretary will beyond doubt take necessary steps in this field. … The MİT is the first source we consult in foreign intelligence. Thus, I believe the organization should become more active in foreign intelligence,” he told reporters.
