Conflict erupts at hospital that treated injured student

21 May 2010 / HASAN ÇILINGIR , İZMIR
Tension erupted yesterday between passersby and a group of students protesting the government outside a Muğla hospital over the injury of a student during a clash at a university.
Muğla University sophomore Şerzan Kurt (21) was shot last week by an unidentified assailant during an armed conflict that broke out between Kurdish and nationalist students in the city. He was pronounced brain dead on Wednesday at the Dokuz Eylül University Hospital. A group of students traveled to İzmir from Manisa and Muğla yesterday, gathering in front of the hospital to protest the state, which it said must be held accountable for the young man’s death.

While the group of students read a press statement, two passersby reportedly made comments that prompted the group of roughly 200 to begin approaching them. They fled into the hospital to escape; the protestors began to follow but were stopped by hospital security. Following about 20 minutes of tension, the demonstrators continued their vigil in the hospital garden.

An autopsy will be performed on Kurt’s body after his corneas are harvested for donation and life support unplugged. His body will be taken to Batman for burial.
