Folksinger Tunç faces 15 years in prison

21 May 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
A Diyarbakır public prosecutor has filed charges against Turkish folksinger Ferhat Tunç, who is known for his activism, over a speech he gave at a festival in August 2009.
In the indictment, it is stated that the festival held by the southeastern province of Siirt’s Eruh Municipality took place on the anniversary of the day when the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) carried out its first armed terrorist attack in 1984.

Noting that the event was held upon the request of the PKK, the indictment read: “It is beyond doubt that the event was held in the name of the terrorist organization within the knowledge and will of the organization. When the speech delivered by suspect Tunç is examined as a whole, it is understood that Tunç, who is not involved in the hierarchical structure of the organization, committed crime for the organization and spread propaganda on behalf of the terrorist organization PKK.” The prosecutor then demanded a 15-year sentence for Tunç.
