Man’s house burned down after deadly shooting

21 May 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
The house of Yusuf Oruç, who killed four people and injured three others on Wednesday following a dispute over a calf in Gölköy, near Kalecik in Ankara province, caught fire that same evening, news reports said on Thursday.
Firefighters from the Kalecik Municipality managed to put out the fire; however, the house is uninhabitable.

After a calf entered a garden belonging to Oruç, Gölköy’s former muhtar (village head), Oruç grew angry and had a heated argument with the calf’s owners. Following the verbal dispute, Oruç entered his residence and returned armed with a handgun, opening fire on the people assembled. Satılmış Koç, Nizamettin Yılmaz, Mustafa Koç and another person who has not yet been identified were shot and killed.

Three other people were injured. The injured were taken to a local hospital. Police have launched an investigation into the incident. Yusuf Oruç, who is in custody, told officers on Wednesday at the police station that he is remorseful over the incident. The cause of the fire has not been determined; however, preliminary reports alleged that a woman deliberately set fire to the house. Nobody was killed or injured in the blaze because the Oruç family was at a relative’s house when the fire took place.
