ÇAYKUR to pay TL 1 for kilogram of fresh tea leaves

19 May 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
Agriculture and Rural Affairs Minister Mehdi Eker has announced that the purchase price of fresh tea leaves has been set at TL 1 per kilogram -- a price floor of Kr 88.5 and a subsidy of Kr 11.5 for cultivators.
Eker, announcing new prices at a press conference in Rize yesterday, said the price floor rose by 12.03 percent from 2009 to 2010. The General Directorate for Tea Production (ÇAYKUR) aims to purchase 600,000 tons of fresh tea leaves this year, he noted, adding that the company’s dried tea production is also predicted to be 110,000 tons. Of total production, 108,000 tons will be sold in the domestic market, the minister stated, with the remaining 2,000 tons to be exported.

Stressing the importance of protecting the quality of tea produced in the Black Sea region, Eker said the government would continue to extend the necessary support to tea leaf cultivators. “Tea producers will earn 65 cents [TL 1] for every kilogram of tea leaves. This figure was 22 cents back in 2002,” he said.
