February unemployment decreases by 1.7 percent

18 May 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, ANKARA
Turkey’s unemployment rate dropped to 14.4 percent in February, with a 1.7 percent decline over the same month of 2009.

The Turkish Statistics Institute (TurkStat) announced the February unemployment figures on Monday, showing that Turkey’s chronic problem had retreated to 14.4 percent, 0.1 percentage point lower than the preceding month.

Unemployment has been plaguing the Turkish economy particularly since the emergence of the 2009 global economic crisis. The rate reached the worst level in Turkish history in February 2009 when it hit 16.1 percent. The figures show that an extra 1,488,000 individuals were added to the army of the unemployed, while the number of individuals employed also fell by 238,000 in February over the same month of 2009. The labor force participation rate (LFPR) increased slightly, by 1.6 percent to 47.5 percent, in February over the second month of 2009. When looking at gender, the participation rate of the female labor force increased by 2.6 percent in February over the same month of 2009, while the male unemployment figure saw a 0.7 percent increase in the same period.

Non-agricultural employment, an indicator that does not include the volatile agricultural sector, also increased by 826,000 persons in February, a sign that urban and industrial unemployment is still growing. Employment in agriculture increased by 1.6 percent and construction grew by 0.1 percent, while that of services decreased by 1.7 percent in February compared to the same month a year before. Of those who were employed in February 2010, 23.7 percent were employed in agriculture, 20.3 percent in industry, 5.3 percent in construction and 50.7 percent in services.

The working age population increased by 863,000 in February 2010 compared to the same period the previous year. Turkey’s non-institutional population increased by 807,000 and has reached 71.04 million, while the non-institutional working age population increased by 863,000 and reached 52.2 million in February 2010. Around 1.5 million people either started work or changed their current job in February 2010, accounting for 7.5 percent of total employment.

Turkey’s unregistered employment –  – people employed without being registered with the social security system –  – also increased by 0.9 percent to 41.7 percent of total employment in February over the same month of 2009.

TİM hopes recovery will create 250,000 new jobs

Turkish Exporters Assembly (TİM) President Mehmet Büyükekşi announced on Monday that he expects their member firms, which have been enjoying growth in business amid recovery from the 2009 global financial crisis, to create around 250,000 new jobs by the end of the year.

The study says Turkish exporters’ business is picking up and that this could contribute to growth in employment. “We expect to see TİM members provide 250,000 new jobs by the end of 2010.” According to the survey, which covers figures from the first quarter of the year, 56 percent of companies that responded said their production increased, while 55 percent said their exports increased in the first quarter over the same period of 2009.
