34 detained over attack on police in Eskişehir

15 May 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
Thirty-four people who assaulted police officers who came to the scene of a dispute in Eskişehir were detained on Thursday.
According to news reports, some people began arguing with three allegedly right-wing university students in front of a student dormitory near Eskişehir Osmangazi University on Thursday. A group of 40 people came to the scene where the dispute broke out to defend their friends. Police officers arrived at the scene to try to get the situation under control; however, the group of nearly 40 people, allegedly supporters of the pro-Kurdish Peace and Democracy Party (BDP), which was established to replace the now-defunct pro-Kurdish Democratic Society Party (DTP), attacked the officers. Two policemen, one student and one security guard were injured.

An investigation has been launched into the event, and in total, 34 people were detained. However, 22 of them were released while 12 of them will reportedly be referred to a courthouse.
