The visit was aimed at celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Democrat Party (DP) winning the May 14, 1950 election. Walking around the Menderes Farm and the village of Çakırbeyli during his visit, President Gül said Menderes has a place in everyone’s heart regardless of party affiliation.Asked about the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) appeal to the Constitutional Court seeking the annulment of the government’s recently approved constitutional amendment package while speaking to reporters upon his arrival in Aydın, Gül said this is their legal right and it is up to the will of political parties and deputies to decide whether to use this right.
Speaking about the date of the referendum on the constitutional reform, Gül said this is the decision of the Supreme Election Board (YSK) and is final. While visiting Aydın, Gül said the area is known to be the homeland of “tough men.” Stating that Aydın made huge contributions during the War of Independence, Gül said he is honored to visit such a province, adding that May 14 is the anniversary of Turkey transforming into multi-party system and his visit coincided with a very meaningful day. He said Aydın has raised great statesmen, particularly the late President Menderes.
After his meeting with Aydın Mayor Özlem Çerçioğlu, Gül then moved to the Aymendo Facilities to meet with representatives of civil society organizations, political parties, businessmen and district mayors. Gül said he has witnessed a very good atmosphere in Aydın in terms of cooperation. “There is good cooperation and dialogue among politicians, businessmen and leading figures in the city,” he noted. Gül also attended the opening ceremony of a hospital and the opening of the Gürmat Aydın Germencik Geothermal Plant.
