Man sets fire to self in front of Prime Ministry
14 May 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
A man immolated himself in front of the Prime Ministry in Ankara yesterday, but was rescued before incurring any fatal injuries.
Atilla Aşır, 55, was allegedly protesting the authorities’ refusal to allow him to bring his Turkmen wife into the country from Iran. He was heard saying, “I have problems,” as he poured flammable material on himself. Prime Ministry security officers extinguished the burning man with fire hoses. Aşır’s hands, face and neck were burned in the incident. He was rushed to Ankara Numune Hospital.
