14 May 2010 / OSMAN ARSLAN, İSTANBUL
Lt. Maj. Ali Rıza Sözen, one of the 21 Sledgehammer coup plot suspects for whom the İstanbul 12th High Criminal Court had issued arrest warrants, was arrested yesterday.
Sözen was arrested after the court’s arrest warrant was read to him at the İstanbul Courthouse in Beşiktaş. Speaking to the press in front of the courthouse, Sözen’s lawyer, whose name was not mentioned, said his client had been receiving treatment at the Kasımpaşa Military Hospital for around one year and that he had surgery for a herniated disc and came to the courthouse after he was discharged from the hospital. According to the Sledgehammer plot, made public by a newspaper in January, the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) had a systematic plan to create chaos in society by bombing mosques and attacking popular museums. The attacks’ desired result was to increase pressure on the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) government for its perceived failure to provide security to its citizens.
