Mine explosion kills one soldier in Hakkari

11 May 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
One soldier was killed and another was injured yesterday when they stepped on a mine believed to have been planted by the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in Hakkari’s Yüksekova district. The names of the soldiers were not released by the time Today’s Zaman went to print. The injured soldier was taken to Hakkari Military Hospital.
Dozens of soldiers have been killed in clashes with the outlawed PKK or due to mine blasts over the past few weeks. The PKK resorting to violence again at a time when Parliament has just approved a constitutional reform package has led to claims that some dark forces allied with the PKK were trying to increase tension in the country to prevent the reforms. The PKK, which is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the European Union and the United States, has been waging a bloody war in Turkey’s Southeast since 1984, claiming the lives of tens of thousands of people.
